The Ladakhi people are descended from the Tibetans and share many things in common with their neighbour - religion, food, customs, dress and language, which is a dialect of Tibetan and uses the Tibetan script.

Ladakhis also revere His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who visits Ladakh every summer to give teachings that typically last for four days.  They are easily accessible, located in Choglamsar (the Tibetan settlement, roughly 8km from Leh) and foreigners have excellent seating and English translation.

Ladakh is predominantly Buddhist, following various sects of Tibetan Buddhism, usually depending on what village you are from, though there are many Muslims and Christians too.  Signs of Buddhism abound and it helps to have some prior interest or knowledge in Buddhism as this is a fantastic opportunity to expound on it.
