Ladakhi life, both monastic and lay, centres around
festivals and rituals and you will have the opportunity
to experience several during your stay.
Ladakhis also revere His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who
visits Ladakh every summer to give teachings that
typically last for four days. They are easily
accessible, located in Choglamsar (the Tibetan
settlement, roughly 8km from Leh) and foreigners have
excellent seating and English translation.
Ladakh is predominantly Buddhist, following various
sects of Tibetan Buddhism, usually depending on what
village you are from, though there are many Muslims and
Christians too. Signs of Buddhism abound and it
helps to have some prior interest or knowledge in
Buddhism as this is a fantastic opportunity to expound
on it.
